GayTalk is not a dating site. It is a friends network for gay young people and young adults. The platform grew out of a clear need. Many gay young people were looking for online contact, but often ended up on news websites or dating sites. On news websites you can read, but not really have a conversation. On dating sites it is mostly about looks and quick matches. A place where you can simply make friends and talk openly barely existed.
The idea for GayTalk started in 2017. We began under the name GayCafe’tje with a single Kik group. That group was small and easy to follow. Members got to know each other through daily conversations. People talked about coming out, about doubts, about falling in love and about friendship. Ordinary topics came up too, like school, work, hobbies and going out. The strength was in the simple contact. You could come in, introduce yourself and join in.
The group grew faster than expected. More and more gay young people found their way to GayCafe’tje through word of mouth. That showed how big the need was. Young people did not want dating pressure. They wanted a place where you can ask questions without judgment. Where you can say that something is on your mind. Where you meet others who go through the same thing.
From that growth came the plan to build further. Extra groups were added so conversations stayed organized. Later Telegram was chosen alongside Kik. That way more people could join and the network stayed reachable. In that period the name was also changed to GayTalk. That name fits the goal better. It is about talking, sharing and connecting.
GayTalk was set up by young people themselves. You notice that in the atmosphere. The conversations are direct and personal. There is room for serious topics, but also for humor and relaxation. You can read along, respond or start a topic yourself. On the website, blogs and posts are shared that fit the community. Think of experiences from other gay young people, tips about coming out, or stories about how someone experienced their first Pride.
Within the groups there are clear rules. You introduce yourself when you are new. You use a normal name. You treat each other with respect. Discrimination, bullying or inappropriate behavior is not accepted. Clear agreements keep the atmosphere pleasant. That matters, because many members share personal stories. Safety and trust come first.
The focus of GayTalk is on friendship and network. Not on dating. That means conversations are not about quick meetups, but about building contact. You get to know each other through conversation. Some members later meet up in real life as friends. Others keep it to online contact. Both are fine. You decide what feels comfortable for you.
GayTalk wants to connect gay young people and young adults with each other. Especially for those who are still searching, it can help to talk to others going through the same thing. You are less alone when you notice that others have the same questions. That can be about acceptance at home, about faith, about relationships or about plans for the future.
Over the past years the network has grown and changed further. Platforms change, but the goal stays the same: offering a social place where you can be yourself. Where you are not judged on looks, but on who you are and what you share.
The rules were recently updated to clarify the target group. GayTalk now clearly focuses on young adults from 18 years and older. That way the network stays fitting for gay young people and adults who consciously choose a social and safe place online.
